Alex Shafer

Secret Friendships

While sitting in a cafe, writing,
I stopped to think.
My mind became noisy, angry,
busy with endless critical lectures.

A young girl at the table
next to mine began tapping
her foot impatiently,
and did not stop,
till I stopped my mind,
and continued writing.

I like the secret acts of friendship,
that happen quietly,
under water,
like pretty fish,
kissing.

This is how to do it.
A totally cool poem. Shafer makes it look easy. He shows a fine but firm hand, just the right touch, knows how to trim to maximize flight path. And it has spirit in addition to literary savvy. It's a very serious poem, despite (because of?) the big grin on its face.
